Onam is celebrated as a great traditional festival in the state Kerala; it is considered the state festival of Kerala. The festival falls in the Malayalam Month Chingam (August to September) On this day, Malayalees believe that the great king Mahabali visits everyone's home.

Earthen mounds, which look somewhat like square pyramids, representing Mahabali and Vamana are placed in the dung-plastered courtyards in front of the house along with the Pookalam, and beautifully decorated with flowers. All over Kerala, Pookalam competitions are a common sight on Onam day.
