Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin or can not use insulin. Normally, starches, sugars and other nutrients are broken down into glucose, and blood was transferred to the cells. The cells use insulin, a hormone substance secreted by the pancreas, helps metabolize glucose into energy. Without enough insulin, or the insulin is not used properly, glucose will be increased in the blood and urine, this will cause a lot of health problems. Patients with diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, nerve damage and numbness leads to pain in the hands and feet, impaired renal function, and eye disease.

Diabetes is growing and affecting 5.5 million people in Vietnam (6% of the population) and 348 million adults in the world - accounting for 6.4% of the adult population worldwide. By 2030, this figure is forecast to rise to 7 million people and 438 million people Vietnam or 7.8% of the adult population worldwide. This disease makes the cost of the loss sufferers. Diabetes creates economic burden due to increased incidence of disease and the number of new related injury appeared. Currently, it is estimated the cost of health care around the world every year for diabetic patients at about 223 billion dollars, this figure is continuing to increase with the incidence of new diabetes . Each diabetics in Vietnam should spend minimum cost of $ 500 per year for the treatment of diabetes. International Diabetes Association (IDF) estimates that spending on diabetes worldwide will be a minimum of $ 561 billion in 2030.
