Sheikh Abdullah Khayyat

Abdullah Abdul Ghani Muhammad Khayyat (born November 23, 1908, Mecca - died January 8, 1995, Mecca), imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, and was a member of the Saudi Council of Senior Scholars.

His life

He is Sheikh Abu Abdul Rahman Abdullah bin Abdul Ghani bin Muhammad Khayyat. He was born in Mecca on the twenty-ninth of Shawwal in the year 1326 AH. He grew up in an average household. His father was religiously cultured and had knowledge of Hanafi jurisprudence, interpretation, and hadith.

His education

He received his primary education at Al-Khayyat School in Mecca and studied the secondary curriculum at Al-Raqiyya School during the era of the Hashemite government. He studied with the scholars of the Grand Mosque and memorized the Holy Qur’an in the Honorary School. He joined the Saudi Scientific Institute in Mecca and graduated in 1350 AH.

His death

Imam Abdullah Abdul Ghani Khayyat died on the morning of Sunday 7 Shaban 1415 AH corresponding to January 8, 1995 in Mecca.

His most important works

A royal decree was issued appointing him as an imam in the Grand Mosque in 1346 AH. He assisted Sheikh Abd al-Zahir Abu al-Samh in Tarawih prayers and performed the night prayers alone.

He was appointed a member of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice pursuant to the Royal Order issued on 1/18/1347 AH.

He was appointed as a teacher at Al-Faisaliah School in Mecca according to a letter from the Director of Education on 2/12/1352 AH.

King Abdul Aziz chose him to be a teacher for his children and appointed him as director of the Princes’ School in Riyadh in 1356 AH. He continued this work until the death of King Abdul Aziz in 1373 AH.

He moved to Hijaz and was appointed as an education advisor in Mecca pursuant to Royal Order No. 20/3/1001 on 4/7/1373 AH.

In the year 1375 AH, he was assigned the management of the College of Sharia in Mecca, in addition to his work as a consultant, and he continued in this work until the year 1377 AH.

In the year 1376 AH, he was assigned to supervise the education administration in Mecca in addition to his work as a consultant.

He was appointed imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque by Royal Order in 1373 AH and continued this work until 1404 AH when he asked His Majesty the King to exempt him due to his health conditions.

A royal decree was issued appointing him as President of the Islamic University of Medina based on the nomination of His Eminence the Grand Mufti Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Al-Sheikh in the year 1380 AH, but he apologized for that and requested an exemption due to special circumstances.

He was chosen as a member of the Board of Directors of the Colleges of Sharia and Education in Mecca pursuant to the Minister of Education’s letter No. 1/3/5/4095 on 11/27/1383 AH.

He worked as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dar Al-Hadith Al-Makiya and a member of the Cultural Committee of the Muslim World League.

He was chosen as a member of the committee emanating from the Supreme Education Council to develop a higher policy for education in the Kingdom in accordance with the letter of His Highness the Prime Minister No. 1343 on 5/27/1384 AH.

He was chosen as a representative of the Ministry of Education at the meetings of the Muslim World League in Mecca according to the Minister of Education’s letter No. 1/2/3/1510 on 10/13/1384 AH.

A royal order was issued to select him as a member of the Council of Senior Scholars since its establishment on 7/8/1391 AH.

He was nominated as a member of the Islamic Jurisprudence Academy of the Muslim World League on 28/1393 AH.

A royal order was issued on 6/18/1391 AH excluding him from the system and not referring him to retirement for life.
