१९४४ मध्ये अमेरिकन पत्रकार लुई फिशर ह्यांच्याशी चर्चा करताना महात्मा गांधींनी नेताजींचा देशभक्तांचा देशभक्त असा उल्लेख केला होता.

नेताजींचे योगदान व प्रभाव इतका मोठा होता की काही जाणकार असे मानतात की जर त्यावेळी नेताजी भारतात उपस्थित असते तर कदाचित भारताचीफाळणी न होता भारत एकसंध राष्ट्र म्हणून टिकून राहिला असता. स्वतः गांधींजी देखील असेच मानत होते.
