‘কোরবানি’ শব্দটি আরবি ‘কুরব’ ধাতু থেকে উদ্ভূত, যার অর্থ নৈকট্য বা সান্নিধ্য। আল্লাহর নৈকট্য অর্জনের উদ্দেশ্যে আত্মোৎসর্গ করাই কোরবানী। শরিয়তের পরিভাষায়, আল্লাহর সন্তুষ্টি লাভের আশায় তাঁর নামে পশু জবেহ করাকে কোরবানি বলে। ঈদুল আজহা উপলক্ষে জিলহজ মাসের ১০ থেকে ১২ তারিখ সূর্যাস্ত পর্যন্ত আল্লাহর নামে নির্দিষ্ট কিছু হালাল পশু জবাই বা কোরবানি করা হয়। এ সম্পর্কে পবিত্র কোরআনে ঘোষিত হয়েছে,

‘আমি প্রত্যেক সম্প্রদায়ের জন্য কোরবানির নিয়ম করে দিয়েছি, যাতে আমি তাদের জীবনোপকরণস্বরূপ যেসব চতুষ্পদ জন্তু দিয়েছি সেগুলোর ওপর তারা আল্লাহর নাম উচ্চারণ করে।’ (সূরা আল-হজ, আয়াত ৩৪)

Qurbani is the word that describes the sacrifice of an animal to Allah (swt) during the period of Eid ul Adha.

The general rule is that Kurbani should be performed by adults of sane mind and affordable means. The Hanafi ulema say it is wajib (obligatory) while the other schools of jurisprudence say it is sunnah. However, it is generally agreed that if a person can afford korbani, they should perform it.

Qorbani can be performed from the 10th day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah until the sun sets on the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah. The best time is to perform the act of Qurbani is immediately after the completion of the Eid-ul-Adha prayers.

Qurbani means sacrifice. Every year during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims around the world slaughter an animal – a goat, sheep, cow or camel – to reflect the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, for the sake of God.

At least one third of the meat from the animal must go to poor or vulnerable people. Traditionally, a Muslim would keep one third of the meat for their family and give the final third to their neighbours.
