In fact, among the themes written by the ulama in the hadiths of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam are the arba'in hadiths. Namely a collection of forty hadiths of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam. They wrote this based on a hadith relating to the virtue of memorizing forty hadiths from the hadiths of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam. An-Nawawi stated in the preamble to his Arba'in book that this hadith came from the nine companions of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam that he mentioned.

Then he said, "And the huffazh scholars (memorizers of hadiths) agree that this hadith is a dha'if hadith, even though there are many ways." And he mentioned that he wrote his Arba'in book not based on that hadith, but based on other hadiths. As he said, sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, "Let those who are witnesses (present) among you convey this to those who are not present." And his words "May Allah glorify someone who listens to my words, then he understands them...".

Then he mentioned thirteen scholars who wrote Arba'in. The first of them was Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak, and the last was Al-Baihaqi. Then he said afterwards, "And there are many more scholars whose number is uncountable, both from earlier and later circles." Then he said again, "Then among the ulama there are those who gather Arba'in in the field of religious principles, some of them in the field of furu' (branches of religion), some of them in the field of jihad, some of them in the field of asceticism, some of them in the field of adab (morals), and some of them in the field of sermons.

All of them mean well, may Allah be pleased with those people who mean well. And I see something more important than all this. That is a collection of forty hadiths that cover all these areas. Each hadith is an important rule of the principles of the Islamic religion. What the scholars have described as these hadiths is the axis of Islam, or half of Islam, or a third or something like that. Then I (Imam An-Nawawi) tried to be consistent in collecting only authentic hadiths in this Arba'in book. Most of which are found in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

I mention these hadiths without sanad so that they are easy to memorize, and so that their benefits can be felt by everyone, God willing... and people who hope for the afterlife should know these hadiths, because these hadiths really cover important matters, and matters relating to obedience. And this is very clear to anyone who pays attention."
