The process of globalization that is currently and is already underway today has in fact reached cultural areas throughout the world as a single human habitation area with relatively the same and one criteria and size. Relatively global culture has become the measure and mark of today's world constellation, namely cultural characteristics that are oriented towards the values ​​of science, technology and art originating from Western syllogistic rational thinking. This process results in a tug-of-war between global power on the one hand and local defense on the other.

In this case, between the globalization process which is oriented and subject to the system and spirit of Western science and technology versus localization which is generally the opposite. The boundary between the two can never be drawn strictly as black and white. Roberston (1990) describes it as the global institutionalization of life-world and the localization of globality.

Various compromise efforts were made so that society had the power to be in both positions and at the same time to be at a balance point between the two positions. Various efforts have been made to generate and empower systems of indigenous knowledge, indigenous technology, indigenous art, indigenous wisdom, which are usually lacking or unscientific but instead are rich or thick in ethical and aesthetic values ​​that are rooted in the culture of the supporting communities. Scientific study of local knowledge will enrich knowledge with a relatively high degree of humanistic values.

In the midst of the vortex of influence of global hegemony, phenomena in the field of education that have occurred have also made educational institutions feel like they have lost their space. Apart from that, it also reduces students' understanding of local history and cultural traditions in their environment. In fact, from a cultural perspective it cannot be denied that Indonesia has an extraordinary wealth of local culture. Junus Melalatoa (1995) has noted that there are at least 540 ethnic groups in Indonesia, each of which has and develops different local traditions or cultural patterns.

These cultural patterns also change as a reaction to the dominant influence of global culture. This counter reaction was not to fight but to find common ground in order to maintain the existence and identity of their group and local culture. One of the efforts to maintain the existence and strengthen culture is carried out through art education which is required to contain local wisdom values ​​and strengthen national character. Of course, as an educational process, it is carried out systemically and takes place in continuous stages in situations and conditions in the family, school and community. Therefore, it is not wrong if education is one of the directions of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Education as a vehicle for humanizing young people is basically an activity to prepare the lives of individuals, communities and a nation towards a better life.
