The Citizen Sentinel is designed for citizen observers or “Citizen Sentinels”.

The Citizen Sentinel App is a part of the larger Island Sentinel Program that began on St. Paul Island, Alaska in 1999 in order to observe and protect the local environment. As a part of the BeringWatch program, the Citizen Sentinel App is designed for citizen observers or “Citizen Sentinels”. It is a tool for community members of all ages to record what they see in their local environment. These observations are recorded in the BeringWatch Database, started in 2006, as a web-based tool for recording and communicating environmental events by both trained sentinels and local community members in the Bering Sea region. Reliably recorded environmental observations are often the first step to identifying and understanding larger changes in the Bering Sea ecosystem. Having good data is key to the BeringWatch program’s efforts to help build community and ecosystem resilience in coming decades.
