BENEFITS OF CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP:

YOU CAN VOTE

As a Canadian citizen, you can vote in federal, provincial and municipal (city) elections. Voting means you get to have a say in who runs your town, city, school board, province, territory, or country.

Voting is a major benefit and a responsibility of citizenship. Canada counts on citizens staying engaged and voting in elections. This ensures that those who get elected are a good representation of who Canadians want to run their governments.

YOU CANNOT BE DEPORTED

If you are not a dual citizen, you are not at risk of being deported. Deportation is when immigration authorities order you to leave Canada. People who are deported are sent back to their country of origin.

People get deported for committing crimes, violating immigration rules (e.g. illegally obtaining your immigration status), or being a security threat to other Canadians.

If you are a Canadian citizen, and do not hold any other citizenship (dual citizen), you are not at risk of being deported.

YOU CAN CONTINUE GETTING SOCIAL BENEFITS

As a Canadian citizen, you continue to get basic healthcare and public school education free of charge. You can also continue to access other social services offered by the Government of Canada, for example, employment insurance or student government loans.

If you have a Social Insurance Number (which allows you to work in Canada) you can work in Canada.

YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS

As a Canadian citizen, you have democratic rights. This includes the ability to run for office. This means you can run in municipal, provincial or federal elections, if you are interested.

YOU CAN TRAVEL EASILY

As a Canadian citizen, you can get a Canadian passport. A passport does not need to be renewed as often as a PR card.

You can also travel to commonwealth countries without tourist visas (you will still need them to work!). Also, you will not have as many travel restrictions as if you travelled using travel documents.

Most importantly, you will be less likely to have trouble re-entering Canada when you travel abroad using your Canadian passport than using another passport.

YOU CAN GET CONSULAR SUPPORT

As a Canadian citizen, you can get a Canadian passport. If you travel using a Canadian passport, you can get support from the Canadian consulate.

A few situations when the Canadian consulate might be able to help you:

• If you lose your passport

• If you get in trouble abroad

• If you or someone you know goes missing

• If you need helping contacting your family in Canada for help

• If you need financial help in an emergency

• If you have more than one citizenship (dual citizenship), it may limit the ability of Canadian consular officials to help you

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO WORK IN ALL JOBS

Some jobs require high-level security clearance, which only citizens can have. This includes some jobs at the federal level. These jobs tend to pay well and have many benefits.

YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE CANADIAN

If your children are born in Canada, they will also be Canadian citizens.

This means they will not have to go through the same process you did of applying for Canadian citizenship. Your children will have access to all the same rights and privileges that you have, as a Canadian citizen.

Some children born outside Canada, to a Canadian parent, became citizens at birth. You can use the “Am I Canadian?” tool to see if your child is automatically Canadian.

and more....
