Crocodiles are large bodied reptiles that live in water. Scientifically, crocodiles include all species of Crocodylidae tribe members, including crocodile crocodiles (Tomistoma schlegelii). However, this name can also be loosely applied to call alligators' crocodiles, kaiman and gavial; namely the relatives of different crocodile tribes.

Crocodiles generally inhabit freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, swamps and other wetlands, but some live in brackish water such as estuarine crocodiles. The main food of crocodiles are vertebrate animals such as fish, reptile and mammals, sometimes also prey on molluscs and crustaceans depending on the species. Crocodiles are primeval animals, which have changed little since evolution since the days of dinosaurs.

Also known are several regional names for calling crocodiles, such as buhaya (Sd.); buhaya (bjn); baya or bajul (Jw.); cigarette (Btw.), bekatak, or frog crocodile to call a small, fat crocodile; ghosts, crocodiles (Mly.), or crocodiles for calling fish crocodiles; pandanus crocodile, a greenish crocodile; copper crocodile, crocodile that is brownish yellow; and others.

In English the crocodile is known as crocodile. This name comes from the mention of the Greeks against the crocodiles they witnessed in the Nile, krokodilos; said formation rooted in the word kroko, meaning 'pebble', and deilos meaning 'worm' or 'person'. They call it the 'rock worm' for observing the habits of crocodiles basking on the rocky banks of the river.
