The Divine Comedy is considered one of the masterpieces of Italian and universal literature. Dante summarizes in it all the extensive knowledge accumulated over centuries, from the ancient classics to the medieval world; their religious faith, and their moral and philosophical convictions.

On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents allegorically the soul's journey towards God.
