Extreme metal is a loose blanket term used to refer to sub-genres of heavy metal music that started in the initial part of the 1980s. Extreme metal music employs “extreme” features like extremely fast or extremely slow tempos, distorted vocals, blast beats, and aggressive or depressing themes; in general, it is a non-commercialized, harsher more abrasive, and underground style – extreme in terms of instrumentation, lyrics, vocals, appearance and stage demeanor.

The main styles of Extreme metal include thrash metal, death metal, black metal, and doom metal, while subgenres include deathcore, grindcore, melodic death metal, and sludge metal. Extreme metal is a counterculture, hence not many sub-genres are popular to mainstream music fans.
