A truly secure program would not ask for any private information. By requiring you to use you phone number this program blows your security out of the water.

  You can switch to WickrMe but it's not fully open source and has less features than Signal. The good thing is that you only have to choose a username and password. No number. But I think Signal is better in many ways

You don't have to reveal your number... You can use any number or other services. Number is only a username because you need an SMS in order to get the code but is not the number you really use to call or text. E.g.
