Guadalcanal can boast a great historical legacy; The archaeological remains show us evidence of settlers thousands of years ago who already occupied these lands. The archaeological remains found in the caves of San Francisco and Santiago provide us with evidence of settlements in the Neolithic.

Archeology also offers us Roman vestiges, such as the remains of a Roman road on the right bank of the Arco stream (the Roman road from Híspalis to Emerita passed through these lands) or the Sarcophagus found on the Santa Marina estate, without a doubt the most significant of the archeology of this period.

The founding of Guadalcanal dates back to the first Iberian settlements, who gave it the name Tereses, Tereja and some have even assumed that it was Canani. Its current name comes directly from the Arabic Guad-al-Kanal.

Due to its strategic location, it was a highly fortified city. Vestiges of the castle and medieval walls remain, although more significant are those used to build the parish of the Assumption. Although we have some data concerning the walled enclosure that already surrounded the town in the Middle Ages, we do not know exactly the date of its construction.

As the town joined the uprisings that broke out the so-called Community Wars, the enclosure was ordered to be demolished as punishment. There were different castles in the area (Valjondo Castle, La Torrecilla Castle, La Atalaya Castle, Monforte Castle), today just There are remains of La Ventosilla.

Guadalcanal shows in its sinuous urban layout, numerous artistic jewels from different historical periods: the Parish Church of Santa María de la Asunción, La Almona, the Church of San Vicente, that of San Sebastián, that of La Concepción, the Hospital de los Milagros, the Convent of the Holy Spirit, the Humilladero del Cristo de la Salud, the Church of Santa Ana, the hermitages of Ermita de San Benito and Guaditoca, patron saint of the town.
