Overview of Historiography

Historiography is the study of the method of historians in the development of history as an academic discipline, and broadly constitutes every historical work on a particular topic. Historiography on a special topic covers how historians examine the topic using certain sources, techniques and theoretical approaches. Scholars have discussed Historiography on topics - such as "Indonesian historiography", "Early Islamic historiography", "Chinese historiography" - as well as various approaches and flows, such as political history and social history. Since the 19th century, with the rise of academic history, historiography literature has begun to develop. The extent to which historians are influenced by groups and their own loyalties - such as their nation state - is a matter of dispute.

Historians' research interests change over time, and there has been a distant shift from traditional diplomacy, economics and politics to newer approaches, especially social and cultural history. From 1975 to 1995, the proportion of history professors at American universities identified with social history rose from 31 to 41 percent, while the proportion of political historians declined from 40 to 30 percent. In 2007, of 5,723 faculties in the history department at British universities, 1,644 (29%) identified themselves with social history and 1,425 (25%) identified themselves with political history.
