What is the best way to make your house bigger with more living space? Add a deck of course, and you will find yourself living outside more than inside especially when the weather is fine. Why be restricted by the weather when we could have an all weather deck that we can enjoy day and night right throughout the year. Imagine yourself entertaining friends and family around a BBQ cookout on your new deck while the kids are in the pool having a ball in full view.

The best place to have a deck is right adjacent to your living room. To give you the best use of your outdoor area you need access straight from your house. If you have no doors outside off your living room then you need to put some in. Cut the necessary hole in the wall and install doors, preferably large wide doors. This will give the impression of expanding your living area right into the outdoors. Bi fold doors are the best if they open the whole wall and fold away to the side. That way your living room is the outside deck area and is very effective.

Bring your deck off at the same level as your house floor so it becomes a continuation of your house. The house side of the deck is attached to the house of course and the outer areas are supported by the deck posts. But why cut your posts off at hand rail height. Carry them right through to roof height and attache a beam to take rafters from your house wall. Use decorative lumber so that the rafters are exposed and match the lumber of your deck. Roof this with either iron roofing or translucent PVC roofing to keep the hot sun off and even rain so you can enjoy your outdoor living at all times. You could even use a waterproof shade cloth on the roof to save costs. Then attach your handrail and you have an enclosed deck area that will be a joy to use

Don't skimp on this area because if you are going to build a deck make it a worthwhile size. You will need to have room for a decent size outdoor table and seating as well as plenty of room for cooking. You can't make this area too big because there is a host of decorating ideas you can use. These can range from pots and tubs with nice trees and plants to growing areas for your kitchen herbs etc. Try and incorporate this deck in with your swimming pool or if you don't have one yet consider an above ground pool. Adjust the level of your deck to suit and continue it right round the pool. This will give you a feeling of massive space and if you can see it from the house your living room will just continue to flow first out on to the deck and then on to the pool giving you a massive living area.
