Practical Guide for Beginners to Magic Hoodoo

Hoodoo is a traditional form of African American folk magic practiced in the Americas, but born in the United States. Its practitioner is called Conjure (conjurer) or Rootwoker (rootkeeper).

It is a magical tradition that has developed from the syncretism of diverse cultures and traditions and magic, the main currents of which come from medieval grimoires; the wisdom of the Indians on herbs and healing and on the part of Haitian voodoo.

The word hodu was first documented in the English language in 1875, listed as a noun and a transitive verb. In AAVE (English African American vernacular) the term is used to describe a spell or magic potion, and can also be used as an adjective, to describe the practitioner. Regional synonyms for the word include conjuration ("conjuration"), conjure ("hiding"), witchcraft ("witchcraft") or rootwork ("works with roots"). [4] However, not all are exact synonyms; the term witchcraft, for example, is problematic, insofar as it implies a moral judgment about the practice of hodu (that is, it is "evil"), or it can be confused with pagan religions, as Wicca, Thelema, Asatrú ... which are actually Neo-Pagan religions that contain Witchcraft. A hodu practitioner cannot be seen as a rootworker if he does not use roots and herbs in his magical practices; thus, rootwork can be understood as a subcategory or "type" of practice, hodu. The conjure, in addition to a classification, can also be seen as a subcategory of the same. For hodu, is a magic technique, when the practitioner learns the techniques and starts to behave like a Conjure or Rootwoker, the conjure and rootwork to become a philosophy of life, stops being just technique and becomes spirituality.
