Mandala a sacred schematic image or a design used in Buddhist and Hindu religious practices.

Mandala symbolizes the sphere of dwelling of deities pure lands of buddhas. In principle the mandala is a geometric symbol of a complex structure that is interpreted as a model of the universe a map of the cosmos. A typical shape is an outer circle a square inscribed in it into which an inner circle is inscribed which is often segmented or has the shape of a lotus. The outer circle is the Universe the inner circle is the dimension of deities bodhisattvas buddhas. The square between them is oriented to the sides of the world.

Mandalas can be either two-dimensional depicted on a plane or volumetric relief. They are embroidered on cloth painted on sand performed with colored powders and made of metal stone wood. It can even be cut from oil which is painted in appropriate ritual colors. Mandalas are often depicted on the floors walls and ceilings of temples. Mandala is so sacred in the East that it is drawn to the accompaniment of special rituals and itself can be considered an object of worship.

Some of the mandalas are made from colored powders to carry out certain ritual practices for example, in the Kalachakra initiation. By the end of the ritual the mandala is destroyed.
