Who were the Maya?

The Maya are an indigenous people of Mexico and Central America. The ancient Maya created one of the world’s most brilliant and successful civilizations, the Maya civilization, located in Mesoamerica. It is particularly noted for its hieroglyphic script, which was the only known fully-developed writing system of the pre-Columbian Americas. It is also noted for its art, architecture (including pyramids), mathematics, calendar, and astronomical system. The Maya civilization developed in a geographical area that includes southeastern Mexico, all of Guatemala and Belize, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador. This region encompassed both the lowlands of the Yucatán peninsula as well as the highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range.
