What is the solar system?
The solar system is the gravitational bound system, which includes the Sun and objects that orbit, directly or indirectly. Of those objects that directly orbit the Sun, the largest eight are the planets, while the others are significantly smaller objects, such as the dwarf planets and small bodies of the solar system. Of the objects that orbit the Sun indirectly, the moons, two are larger than the smaller planet, Mercury.
The solar system formed 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a giant interstellar molecular cloud. The vast majority of the mass of the system is in the Sun, with most of the remaining mass contained in Jupiter. The four smaller inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, are terrestrial planets, essentially composed of rock and metal. The four outer planets are giant planets, being substantially more massive than earthlings. The two largest, Jupiter and Saturn, are gas giants, being essentially made up of hydrogen and helium; The two outermost planets, Uranus and Neptune, are ice giants, being essentially made up of substances with relatively high melting points compared to hydrogen and helium, called volatiles, such as water, ammonia and methane. All the planets have almost circular orbits that are found in a nearly flat disk called an ecliptic.
