An App Like No Other

Fall in love. This app will give you a virtual and vicarious experience of a 60s romance. The year is 1969. Kate has been protesting the war in Vietnam. Ted enlisted. They’re in love, and they wrote letters. Kate saved them – all these years. Now, 49 years later, one of Ted’s letters will be delivered to your mailbox on the exact day it was written in 1969.

You will be Kate, the girl back home. You’re not sure of this relationship. You knew Ted only four months before he made he decided to enlist and two more months before he left for Basic Training. Did he enlist because he loved you or because he didn’t? His letters will let you know. You don’t know if Ted will actually be sent to Viet Nam. If he is sent, then what?

This app will send you a notice every time a letter arrives in the mail. Sometimes you will have to wait just like Kate did, and you’ll wonder about his love even more. The waiting is the vicarious part! As Kate, you will wonder about everything in the beginning. Later on, you will wonder what will happen when he comes home on leave. Will he have changed? Will you have changed?

Values were different in the 60s. While you might be thinking “drugs, sex, and rock and roll” you’ll be surprised at how innocent and naïve’ these two young people are. They are facing two very moral decisions of their life: the morality of war and the morality of sex before marriage. You can decide on the wisdom of the decisions they make.

With this app, you essentially are an actor. You’re playing the role of Kate. We hope the letters will help you take a walk back to the 60s, as least in the life of two Midwestern college students. Hopefully this app will give you an insight as to what it meant to have anti-war views and yet to be connected to the war. Most importantly, we hope this app will give you insights into your own relationship and your own moral decision making process. Peace out!
