His biography

He is Abd al-Rahman bin Ahmed bin Muhammad bin al-Bashir Benmoussa al-Hamsasi al-Hasnawi al-Salawi. He was born in the city of Salé on August 28, 1908 AD. Abd al-Rahman Benmoussa grew up in a house of knowledge, where his father, the scholar Ahmed Benmoussa, was a jurist and hadith scholar. Memorizing the Qur’an was completed. He moved on to memorizing Al-Jarumiyyah, Lamiya Al-Af’al, and the message of Ibn Abi Zaid Al-Qayrawani at the hands of Sheikh Abd al-Hadi Atubi. He also studied under a group of sheikhs, such as Sayyid Ahmad ibn Abd al-Nabi and Sheikhs Abu Shuaib al-Dakali and Muhammad ibn al-Arabi al-Alawi. One day during Ramadan, the court judge called him and told him that it was his turn to lead King Mohammed V. At the end of the prayer, the royal chamberlain called him and told him that his intonation and chanting impressed the king. So the king summoned him to the royal palace and asked him to settle down in a happy place, and he granted his request. Haj Abdel Rahman Benmoussa used to lead the prayers during Ramadan with the king, his sons, and his clan. Within the framework of building the Mevlevi school, Muhammad V assigned him to teach the then Crown Prince Hassan II, and in order for the sheikh to be closer to the Mevlevi school in which he taught, the king gifted him a house in the royal palace. Al-Siddiq Maanino (the former director of Moroccan television) said: Whenever things got tough for King Mohammed V and he saw colonial conspiracies affecting him and putting him in a state of distress, he would summon Professor Abdel Rahman Benmoussa to sit next to him and recite the Qur’an to him and recite a group of verses. When King Mohammed V was exiled to Madagascar, the jurist refused to stay in the royal palace and returned to the city of Salé. People got to know his voice on the national radio, then they got to know his picture on Moroccan television in the early sixties, which he used to open and end its broadcasts with verses from the Holy Qur’an.

His death

He died on Monday, Shawwal 17, 1417 AH, corresponding to February 24, 1997, at the age of eighty-nine.
