DIGNIFY: Nethra numérique pour les yeux

This is an Android application software. A smart phone fixed on a fixture captures the page of printed text, and sends the audio to the headset of low-vision or visually impaired user. DIGNIFY is an Android Mobile Application that reads the page of a printed book placed on the DIGNIFY hardware platform, converts in to text and speaks it out through headphone. This application does OCR to text and text to voice conversions. It reads out the contents of the entire page (except the pictures). After a page is read, it prompts the user to turn the page, the user turns to the next page, and this application starts reading from the next page. To begin with, it reads any English textbook and reads it out. This will be very useful to visually impaired people to read the normal textbooks without any need to convert them in to braille or audio books.

Supported Languages: English and Hindi

DIGNIFY hardware platform features:

 Supports a maximum of A3 book size

 Supports page aligner mechanism

 Supports page flatner mechanism

 Adjustable height with a telescopic post

 Cradle with adjustable holder to hold a smart phone

DIGNIFY software features:

 Calibration mode to setup the smartphone and the DIGNIFY hardware platform

 Display the “Mean Confidence Index” to indicate the reading accuracy rate on the screen

 Reads English and Hindi Text Book (other languages support planed)

 Supports the voice commands through a Headphone or Earphone to navigate in the book

 Supports NVBA (Non-Visual Book Access derived from NVDA) commands to navigate the book

 Voice messages to the users

Possible Navigations through Voice or NVBA commands:

o Speech speed rate adjustments from Zero to maximum

o Speech volume adjustments from minimum to maximum

o Speech “Pause”, “Resume”, “Skip” features

o Read paragraph “Previous”, “Current”, and “Next” selection

o Read line “Previous”, “Current”, and “Next” selection

o Read word “Previous”, “Current”, and “Next” selection

o Spelling: “Word”

NVBA (Non-Visual Book Access): It is used to navigate the books which is derived from NVDA(Non-Visual Desktop Access) screen reader for the Microsoft Windows.

Following are some prerequisites for using DIGNIFY:

 Android Smartphone with screen sizes 5.2” or above

 Android OS version 15+ i.e., Ice Cream 4.0.3 and above

 Minimum 13 MP primary camera (rear)

 4GB RAM, 32GB internal memory

 Install Google TTS before installing the application and Enable Google TTS in the settings

• Settings->Text to Speech output->Select “Google Text-to-speech Engineer

• And then set the English(India) as language and install preferred voice data.(Optional)
